We aren't invested in XHTML in any significant way, so I'd rather just switch to strict HTML 4. It can't handle mime type "application/xhtml+xml", which is what we serve. I just tried it again thinking that maybe it might have been something about the way the computer I was using the other day was configured as a result of something a previous user might have done, but it still doesn't load properly (and still asks me to save a file instead of opening the page in the browser window). As near as I can tell this is a problem with the site (not the browser I'm using since EVERY other site I've gone to loads fine), indicating to me that the designer didn't spend enough time making sure the site was compatible with various browsers before uploading it to the server (or it's a botched server configuration).
