I'm new to this K-3D app so I have lots of questions but the first one has to do with seeing a preview and rendering. When I select Preview from the Render menu I get a dialog saying "Choose a render engine to be used for preview image rendering".

"RenderMan Engine" is what shows. When I click OK I get another dialog that says "You must choose the specific RenderMan implementation to use with this render engine".

What am I supposed to do to get this up and running? I have been looking for directions from the web site on what to do but can't see anything.

I am working with 0.8.0.2 on Ubuntu 11.01. I just installed K-3D last Thursday. I am an artist/designer and not an engineer. I have been looking for something usable to help with some sculpture model ideas and this one looked like it might be the easiest to work with. That is it for starters.

as I am looking into archives (circa 2005) of datasets, I ran into .k3d files. I downloaded k3d software, only to find out that those files are not supported by the current version of the modeler.
What I want to do is to convert those files in an open standard format - COLLADA - so I can archive the files in a format that I will always be able to open in the future.
I seems that K3D has a COLLADA export features, so how do I get those older files into K3D modeler?

Note: this is a serious business need, so I will consider offers to do the conversion for a fee.

Hi!

I'm quite new to K-3D and 3D modeling in general. I can deal with polygons and straight edges more or less fine by now, but I want to make a pipe with a spiral cross-section. I guess I could try to make a spiral NURBS and extrude it, however I don't always get lucky with NURBSExtrudeCurve and I don't think I can draw a good looking spiral by hand. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!

Hi there,

I am new to using KD-3D and I am currently following the tutorials to increase my knowledge of using this beautify piece of software. However I am posting as I have a question I wish to ask. I am hoping to start making a short animated movie within the next couple of months. I would also like to make this a 3D movie like you get at the cinema either encoding it as an analglyph or stereoscopic video.

I have the additional software to do this however it requires a left and right video file to encode it into a meshed single video file. Does KD-3D have the capability of rendering a sequence into a 3D movie file or can you add an extra camera and render the output of this camera as either the left or right channel.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

I've made an attempt to gather the dependencies for k-3D and I got stuck at building gtkmm. It seems that they don't have any more the support for building gtkmm under Windows with Visual Studio (docs aren't consistent with the actual package). I suppose that for Windows release you're using Mingw. Or is there another way?

This has probably already been reported but I could'nt see it in the forum and I am still too much of a k3D tourist to know where the prefered bugtracker is, just checking the improvements from times to times. The program is starting to get more stable at startup now. Except the following:

If I try to change any of the window to a Material Manager, it crashes.

I'm using Windows XP SP3 on a Pentium 4M laptop with ATI mobility radeon 7500 and 760 Mo of RAM.

Hi. I'm using K-3D (Version 0.8.0.1) to view 3D models created by others.

I've managed to import .DAE files just fine, but haven't figured out how to import .OBJ files.

I'm also not sure how to add textures to the models. The texture files are all .PNG, and there is also a .MTL file included.

I'm very new to all of this, and feel quite overwhelmed by how complex it all is! Any help would be very appreciated! Thank you. =)

Hello,

To see what will happens, I tried to create a loop in a pipeline. I expected an error notification from K-3D, but did not get one (there no crash too, an that was good).

Then later I saw the page:
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Visualization_Pipeline_Loops

Ok, now I know why I did not get a message from K-3D. I understand the rational behind this (no crash), but I believe raising an alert box and refusing to apply an accidental loop, could be a better option. Better an alert so that the user know he/she did something wrong, than silently doing something else which the user will not predict.

Note aside: this pipeline oriented design is clean, that's nice.

Hello,

There is a tiny error in the Wiki. Could not correct, as the Wiki seems locked.

http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Viewports_and_Cameras
says:
> If you split an existing Viewport Panel, it just duplicates it,
> without prompting you for a new Camera. At first glance, we should
> probably prompt you in this case, too.
It appears at least version 0.8.0.2, does not duplicate the camera any more. So the “should probably” is not meaningful anymore here, and the whole sentence should be removed.

I'm a newbie at K-3D and I've tried to find the following in the docs and forum. Apologize if it's already covered.

I like the MakeSDS feature, as it creates some beautifully smooth objects. I'd like to 3d print some of these objects using a makerbot plastic printer, but I need the object in STL. I can only get the 'frame' that the smooth object has been made inside. I can't seem to be able to export the smooth shape to STL using the STLMeshWriter. Is it possible? Is there a way of doing this? Exporting the smooth object to some format that can be saved?

I'm using version 0.8.0.1 and reading STL using ReplicatorG (it supports some other formats than STL experimentally).

Hello, my name is Andreas and I am new here. I installed K-3D on my Linux Ubuntu today becaus I want to learn how to make good 3D animations.

I beginned to try to make a simple computer circuits. You can find out from this link how a circuits look like http://www.solarbotics.com/assets/images/atmega8l/atmega8l_pl.jpg

As you can see. It is a board with legs. The problem for me it is to make these legs. How do to that? I did the board by create a simple polygonal cube and changed it to good size so it look like a board. But how to do the legs? Can I add lines or how should I do?

Andreas

Hi all,
Im new to using K-3D and pretty much 3D modeling in general. I was looking at a tutorial "Simple Face and Head 3D Modeling" and right off in the beginning they go to the create menu on the top, then go to what looks like development, and they have probably 15 different options under that...i only have 2 options. Any idea on why that is? im not sure what option they use under development because i cannot see it very clearly, something to do with Mesh i think. Is there something else i need to install to get all of these options?

Thanks much,
Sam

I need to have a solution to help me with my 3D modelling after my 2D plans are drawn. Will K-3D be able to assist in the creation of my 3D models. This is a requirement for my project submission.
