I started answering your question without noting you are using .6.5.
Which OS and version are you using?
Linux, Mac or Windows?
Here is a tutorial for 0.7

It is similar in .6.5 (although i remember reference images may not work in that version, so try it out)
If you are working with windows the last K-3D version should work (0.7.10)

Which service pack and language?
Is it 64bit version?
You have the same problem with 0.6.7 isn’t it?

Does the program display something and crash or it just crash without showing a window?
I suggest trying to disable the 3d acceleration and see if it is the 3d driver.
Do you have any other 3d program that works well? (blender for example?)
The more details the better to diagnose.
