Hi,

I’d like to compile K-3D with VS and extend it with an additional export plug-in. After trying around with several versions of the required libs, I must admit that I need some help.

- Can somebody tell me, which version of which lib is needed to support the newest K-3D sources?
- As far as I understand, I have to recompile every lib K-3D depends on with MSVC, to make K-3D able to compile with MSVC. Is this true?
- Did somebody try to compile K-3D with MSVC? What are your insights?

Note: I need and want to use VS.

If I managed to compile K-3D with MSVC and get the exporter working I’d be willing to support the MSVC build in the future.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Actually Anders Stenberg has done a lot of progress on the VS topic.

But my best suggestion is to subscribe to k3d-development mailing list. Since there you will get much more support. And you can discuss topics about the design of your plugin.

Are you interested in releasing the plugin to the public?

I read the last post from Anders in the archive and it is very interesting. He seems to have solved a lot of the problems I’m faced with today.

But... maybe I don’t need to compile the whole project.

I installed the 0.7.11 binaries and found, that there is a K-3D Sdk (...\\K-3D 0.7.11.0\\include\\k3d\\k3dsdk). If I could use the SDK to write my export plug-in without having to recompile the whole system, it would be very convenient.

Of course I can publish the importer/exporter, if it is of any interest. The exporter is for a proprietary format, but it might be a good sample for other exporters. The importer is for VRML or X3D.

I don’t know if you can mix VS with the compiled gcc version for windows. I think you can’t, so you should recompile the whole project. Anders will give you more tips on the mailing list probably.

No, you can’t mix compiler versions. The distributed binary is compiled with MinGW GCC 4.3, so any external plugins will have to be compiled with that, as well.

We are very interested in getting K-3D to build with Visual Studio, so it would be great if you can help figure it out together with Anders.
