K-3D Main site acting weird!!

When I type the address http://www.k-3d.org into my web browser I get prompted to save a file with the name 'k-3d_org' (I didn't save it though) additionally when I managed to find my way to the wiki (via a link from another site) the 'download' link misbehaved too and prompted me to save a file named 'downloads' when I opened this file it contained the following information:

Hopefully this will help someone to correct the errors with the site so that everything works properly again! In the mean time can someone post a functional link to the 32 bit Windows version of K-3D?

What web browser are you using? The page is standard XHTML, it sounds as if your browser isn't handling it correctly ...

I'm using IE8 on the computers at my local public library, I have tried using compatibility mode as well and neither mode makes the site function correctly for me. I just tried it again thinking that maybe it might have been something about the way the computer I was using the other day was configured as a result of something a previous user might have done, but it still doesn't load properly (and still asks me to save a file instead of opening the page in the browser window). As near as I can tell this is a problem with the site (not the browser I'm using since EVERY other site I've gone to loads fine), indicating to me that the designer didn't spend enough time making sure the site was compatible with various browsers before uploading it to the server (or it's a botched server configuration). As I said EVERY single site I visit OTHER than the K-3D main site works just fine (this in and of itself tells me it's not my browser that's the problem!), the problem even exists on the download link in the Wiki too.

Hey, since I am browsing these forums too, I saw this post.

I was able to duplicate the Issue on my Windows 7 laptop running IE8.

It actually is a problem with IE 8, the site is probably not doing anything outside of acceptable standards. It is IE 8 is not following standards, however, unfortunately because of how "common" IE 8 is, the site is probably going to have be fixed.

I checked the site here and there were two errors reported:
http://validator.w3.org/

Most sites have a lot of errors, for example, http://www.yahoo.com had 143 errors when i tested. So two is near perfect.

It looks like it has to do with the fact that the site is XHTML and that Microsoft isn't really handling XHTML.

So I am not sure if IE 8 will ever work with this XHTML site.

Firefox 2 works.
Firefox 3 works.
Google Chrome works.
Konqueror works.

I often have sites that are coded correctly that just don't work in IE, it drives me crazy.

There is a bug in IE8 and 9, well actually a deficiency, you will need to file a bug report with Microsoft and then use another browser until they release an update.

It is definitely a bug in IE. It can't handle mime type "application/xhtml+xml", which is what we serve. It's easy to implement a server-side workaround that will just affect IE though, see http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/wrongWithIE/?chapter=XHTML

I learned a lot about this topic at http://www.webdevout.net/articles/beware-of-xhtml ... in a nutshell, it simply isn't possible to use XHTML with IE without resorting to counterproductive hacks. We aren't invested in XHTML in any significant way, so I'd rather just switch to strict HTML 4. In practice, it seems that this would be the best option even if IE wasn't broken, since HTML 5 seems to be where the interesting features are.
