scripting question

Hi All,
If I write a script that creates a scene with a number of primitives such as spheres and cylinders, how do I 1) group certain objects into one of several different material categories (the objects are not necessarily contiguous), and 2) export the scene to a Wavefront OBJ file preserving the material information?
I am interested in working mainly via the scripting interface because I am used to the POV-Ray style of work. I need to be able to generate Wavefront OBJ files for use in commercial rendering programs.
Thanks!
Heinz

Each of the primitives has a \"material\" property, so you can share zero-to-many material nodes among your primitives in whatever way makes sense. See share/scripts/create_bilinear_patch.py for an example of creating a material node via script and assigning it to a patch.
As far as OBJ export goes, we don’t export mtl files currently, this would require some C++ coding, *or* you could create an export script pretty easily.
Cheers,
Tim

Thanks for the Info!
Could you please point me to an example of a script that exports a set of objects to OBJ format?
Thanks!
Heinz

There aren’t any OBJ-specific examples that I’m aware of, you might take a look at the file share/scripts/export_raw.py for a simple example of an export script.
One caution, I just realized that this script has some obsolete syntax, I’ll have to update it in CVS. But it should get you started.
You may also want to look at share/scripts/generate_schema_samples.py and share/scripts/generate_wiki_docs.py as examples of scripts that query plugins for data.
Cheers,
Tim

Sorry, it wasn’t included. Please download and install K-3D 0.5.0.39 instead:
