Problems with Python Engine

This message was originally posted by Nobody/Anonymous on 04/28/2006 05:36:24
Hi,
I was looking for an easy way to generate some 3D triangles to visualize some data and found K-3D. I greatly appreciate the Python Engine.
But it seems that I have some problems with that magic token. My own scripts, that script from K-3D wiki (creating a cylinder) and the scripts from the scripts directory do not work. They result in an error saying that the scripting language could not be determined.
I checked all the scripts I tested and the magic token (#python at the beginning of the file) seemed to be right. The Javascript engine works fine.
Could you give me hint how to work out this problem?
Thanks in advance, Sandra

Since you mention Javascript, I assume you’re using a really outdated version of K-3D (0.4), so the first step would be to get up to the current release, 0.5.9.0, which has many improvements, including some changes to the Python object model.
Cheers,
Tim

Sorry, I forgot to mention the version. You’re right, I used version 0.4.3 shipped with debian (stable, sarge).
I tried out the all-in-one-setup for K-3D 0.5.9 for windows. Everythings works fine now. Thanks!
Cause I am a computational biologist, the objects (plugins) Atom and Molecule marked as experimental catched my eye in version 0.4.
I’ve also found some hints to a PDB files import plugin by searching the K-3D wiki and the internet, but I failed to find it or related stuff in the wiki plugin list.
Are they removed from or merged with some other objects in the current release? Or did I lose sight of them?
Thanks for your help,
Sandra

The chem module, which included the Atom and Molecule plugins and the PDB importer, suffered from a lack of clear requirements, was unmaintained, and ultimately removed.
If you wanted to import PDB data today, a Python script creating instances of the \"Sphere\" plugin to represent individual atoms would provide the same functionality. Bonds between atoms could be represented using the \"Cylinder\" plugin.
Cheers,
Tim
