strang behavior with win2000 & RAID

This message was originally posted by Marc on 05/20/2006 08:07:33
after some realy encouraging works with k-3d, i tried to save my project on my CG-Workstation (W2k-sp4 with a SCSI-Stripeset of 4 18gig disks).
Trying to load the .k3d-file again failed!!
K3D just crashed with the message, an unexpected error occured...
I gave it a try on a \"normal\" disk (no Stripe, but SCSI) - it worked!
Same on another PC (normal IDE-disk) - no problems saving and loading files.
So my idea is, k-3d has some problem writimg files on the (software, no controller)-stripeset.
How can that be ??
Greetings
Marc

K-3D uses the C++ standard library for file I/O, so there’s nothing from a coding standpoint that we could be doing that would be particular to some disk configuration.
Having said that, we do have a bunch of bug reports about crashes loading files on Win32, that we haven’t been able to reproduce. We’d be really, really grateful if you could help us troubleshoot the problem.
To begin, could you post a (minimal) file that causes a crash in the bug tracker?
Many Thanks!
Tim

well, as far as i can see, it *might* be a similar case like all the other crashes you mentioned...
Please give me a few days to prepare a crash report - problem is, my production-PCs are not connected to the internet, but I will connect one to send you a bug-report.

hello again !
tried to reproduce the problem on some of my PCs - see latest bug-report (22th may).
Problem occurs on W2k with and without RAID and also on my Win XP Pro-Laptop...
My fresh love with K3d is little bit disturbed...
a program which is not able to save its own files !?!?
Sorry to be that hard
Greetings

I did some experiments writing a sl-metafile - at the first sight it seems a bit comlicated.
Now I have my first success using a XML-editor (oxedit from sourceforge) - having understood the principles its now an easy thing to do.
I think I will post some of the shaders here together with the meta-files.
But after all - it is a anoying thing to write these meta-files for a bunch of shaders !
Hopefully there will be an import-function in the future (or a plug-in or something else)

Actually, a clarification - can you manually post a sample .k3d file that won’t load, *without* using bug buddy?
Thanks,
Tim

It isn’t an issue of importing, the point of the metafiles is to provide information about arguments that isn’t available in the SL source.

sorry - but I don’t know what you mean with that..
As far as i interpreted the meta-files, its nothing else than a description aof an .sl-files options/arguments-header - may be I missed something ???
think I need some more explanations...

Yes Sir !
I did already - my post is the one from the 22nd
If needed / useful, I can send you more blackbox-files and corresponding .k3d.
Or maybe if you send me some of your .k3d-files (i think e.g. of the ones for feature-testing), I will try to save and load and send you the error-messages / blackbox-logs.
Greetings

oops - I just checked the \"bugs\"-part of this page...
My error-message is the 1493107- crash while loading a .k3d file,
Did you get the attached files ???
If not, it was a problem of the bug-buddy - it hanged while sending this bug-report.
So after all - the question is - how can I mail .k3d and logfiles to you???
