When I try to use the saverib renderman engine, I always get the error:
[k3d-renderframe] ERROR: Failed to execute child process \"file=`Xdialog\" (No such file or directory)
How do I fix this?

\"Xdialog\" is one of many packages designed to provide graphical user interface dialogs for scripts - others include \"dialog\", \"cdialog\", \"Wdialog\", and \"zenity\". Once you’ve identified a package on your system or installed one, you can modify your ~/.k3d/options.k3d file to use it. Find the entry that looks like

file=Xdialog --stdout --title "Save RIB File As:" --fselect ~/world.rib 0 0; if [ -n "$file" ]; then cp "%1%" $file; fi

and modify it to use the package you have installed (obviously, the options will vary depending on which dialog package you use).
If you only need to save an occaisional RIB file, you can also run K-3D from a command-line, preview render, and watch the console output to see where the RIB is saved, usually somewhere along the lines of
/tmp/k3d-preview-XXX/frame/world.rib
Cheers,
Tim

Does just saverib use Xdialog? Any other time something pops up a dialog for saving or anything it works fine.
I just compiled and installed Xdialog, and it’s working from the command line, but k3d still gives me the same error.

Hmm.. Looks like for some reason my computer is just having problems with the way it’s called from the options.k3d file.. Can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t work though.

The Save RIB option is a hack of the options file, anywhere else in the program that you see a file dialog, it’s C++ code. At some point in the future we will likely take a lot of the rendering-related stuff out of the options file and put it in C++ so it integrates better with the UI.
