?.UV Mapping Question.?

This message was originally posted by WHiTeRaBBiT on 12/19/2006 11:36:14
Hey guys,
I’ve been getting more used to K-3D and I got to say I like it alot!
In some ways it reminds me of Max or Maya but geared toward Renderman.
I would like to someday see it become my main production tool!
For now though I’m looking for a way to get UV mapping on my OBJ imports
working in K-3D. Is this possible yet? If not what would be involved in
making it work? Or should I wait until K-3D supports complex mapping.
What I’m thinking is using OBJ imports to get UV mapping/hair/liquid/cloth
out of blender into K-3D and then tweak/shade the models to create the
scenes for pixie. This way I can use blenders capabilities until K-3D can
do this stuff on its own.
Thanks in advance!!
BTW: I love the new instancing! Once the new Pixie is released I should be
able to handle much more complex scenes, Thanks Again!!!

We have successfully extracted texture coordinates from OBJ in the past ... depending on how you plan to map texture coordinates from OBJ to pixie we might be able to come up with something short-term (remember that texture mapping will be a major part of the 0.8 release). What do you have in mind?
Cheers,

?.UV Mapping Question.?

I’m assuming RM can handle per face UV coordinates or can it only do sphere/plane/box projections?
My thinking was to use blenders UV mapping to get textures aligned and then export as an OBJ.
If I can get geometry into K-3D with UV already done then I can use K-3D for tweaking geometry,
shader application, scene generation and rendering. That way I can use blender to suppliment K-3D
until K-3D can handle these things itself. So basically I want an OBJ containing mesh geometry
and UV coordinates to be imported into K-3D so shader textures mapped the same on render.
Can K-3D already do that or did I miss it in the docs?
Hope that made sense!?
Thanks Tim

If you load an OBJ file using the OBJMeshInput plugin, and your file contains texture coordinates (\"vt\" records in OBJ-speak), the coordinates will be passed-along to RenderMan, where they can be accessed in a shader. It’s up to you to ensure that the texture coordinate data names match what the shader(s) expect; OBJMeshInput has three properties that allow you to assign names to the first, second, and third elements of each coordinate. The defaults \"s\" and \"t\" are informal naming conventions that should work with many shaders. Give it a shot, and be prepared to send along a sample OBJ file, texture, your shader source code, and a reference shot of what it’s supposed to look like ;)
Cheers,
Tim

Thanks, I should of known K-3D could already do it ;)
I’ll study into it and give it a shot.
Thanks again!!!

Just to set reasonable expectations - this code was used once for an experiment; I’m expecting that some effort will be required to get it working for you. In particular, there is no guarantee that any of the current collection of texture-enabled shaders will do what you want.

Tim

Hey Tim,
Well I got it working with no problems whatsoever!! As far as I can tell all shaders that use mapping work just fine.
I’ve including some links to the test renders and a Zip that has the blender file, texture and the K3D file.
I didn’t have to modify the shaders so I just included the K3D. This is only a very ugly and quick test but does show
it worked perfectly. As I get all the pieces together and produce something worth looking at I will certainly pass them
along ;)

I have a different question but I’ll post it separate.
Thanks for the help!
