Can’t run K-3d under Windows ME

This message was originally posted by Nobody/Anonymous on 12/24/2006 09:54:15
I can’t run k-3d under windows me. Version 0.6.5 gives me an \"unspecified fatal error aborting\" I used the windows all in one install. I also tried version 0.6.4 and although it came up the screen had no text only little rectangles where the text would be. Could anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I’ve written some new documentation to cover this topic:
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/User_Properties
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/RenderMan_Options_and_Attributes
... in a nutshell, you can’t add attributes to mesh sources / mesh modifiers, you have to add them to the MeshInstance, since it is what actually generates the RIB.
Cheers,
Tim

This message is indicative of an uncaught exception. Try running K-3D from a command-line and post any messages that are printed. Alternatively, try running it in depends or a debugger.

Tim

Can’t run K-3d under Windows ME

Alrighty that did it with the instance objects but I’m still having a problem.
I need to insert this:
Hider \"photon\" \"emit\" 300000
in the rib (after the frame declaration). I’ve tried inserting this in the
\"Renderman Engine\" node. If I use a \"Option\" I get a \"Attrib\" in the rib, and
I can’t get a \"User\" or \"Option\" in the rib at all. I’m assuming the above
declaration will require a \"User\" parameter since its not a attribute or option.
I’ve got env map, shadow map, ray refl, ray shadows working and now I’m trying to
get ambient occ and photon mapping working through K-3D under Pixie. I’m assuming
a \"User\" parameter should be able to be inserted anywhere?
Is this true? Why does a Option become up as Attrib in the rib for \"renderman engine\" node?
A bug? Can this be done K-3D or will it need to be put in by hand?
Thanks ahead of time ;)

Thanks for your reply Tim. I ran it from a command line and got the same error message \"unspecified fatal error, aborting\". Don’t have a debugger. Are there any command line flags?

Several inter-related things going on here:
First, there’s no way to specify the hider at the moment. This is not an option or an attribute, it’s a separate RenderMan command, \"RiHider\". I’ve added a bug in the bug tracker to handle this, the short-term workaround is going to be manual tweaking of the RIB, sorry.
Second, you can pass parameters to the hider in one of two ways (for Pixie, at least) ... you can specify them with the \"RiHider\" command (what you’re trying to do), or you can specify them separately using options, see
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~okan/Pixie/doc/options.htm
Third, as you’ve discovered, RenderMan option properties are being incorrectly inserted as attributes into the RIB file. That’s a bug, but it’s fixed in CVS.
Many thanks!

Graham:
You can try adding \"--log-level debug\" to the command line, but I suspect that won’t help - for some bizarre reason, stdout/stderr don’t seem to get printed on all Win32 platforms. We really need to implement a logging window of our own for Win32, I’ve added a bug to the tracker for this.
In the meantime, Dependency Walker is a freely-available tool for Win32 that may be useful for detecting the underlying problem, see the instructions in the Wiki at http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Troubleshooting_DLLs
Many thanks,
Tim

Tim,
Thanks again. Dependency walker static analysis is fine. On the dynamic side I get:
GetProcAddress(0xBFF10000 [GDI32.DLL], \"GdiAddGlsRecord\") called from \"OPENGL32.DLL\" at address 0x77241FD0 and returned NULL. Error: The specified module could not be found (126).
GetProcAddress(0xBFF10000 [GDI32.DLL], \"GdiAddGlsBounds\") called from \"OPENGL32.DLL\" at address 0x77241FDD and returned NULL. Error: The specified module could not be found (126).
GetProcAddress(0xBFF10000 [GDI32.DLL], \"GdiIsMetaPrintDC\") called from \"OPENGL32.DLL\" at address 0x77241FEA and returned NULL. Error: The specified module could not be found (126).
and then later:
Second chance exception 0xC0000005 (Access Violation) occurred in \"LIBK3DNGUI.DLL\" at address 0x01818132.
Both gdi32.dll and opengl32.dll are in my windows\\system directory and libk3dngui.dll in c:\\k3d.
Does this help? Thanks.

The GetProcAddress() errors are harmless and can be ignored; that last error message narrows things down to the module, but still doesn’t provide any info on the actual cause. I’ll look into some better logging for our next release. Hopefully then if you run it we can gather enough info to solve it.
Many thanks for your persistence!
