Compiling in Sabayon

Hello,
I’m Anton and I would like to congratulate the dev team for such a wonderful app. I am a 3D artist here in the Philippines and I am in the process of creating a new modeling reel. I have decided to create some models with K-3D because it has the \"feel\" of those big 3D apps that I’m used to. It will be my main OSS 3D tool. :)
I am also a newbie to the wonderful world of Linux and have been introduced to it just last month via Puppy Linux 2.15CE and then Sabayon 3.3 which I have a DVD of. However, I was disappointed when I found out that it doesn’t have K-3D on it and since I cannot get my dial-up working in it yet I have no way to look at the repositories. So, my only recourse is to compile it. I already have the source and I would like to know if there are other files I need (dependencies).
So, if there is someone here who uses Sabayon or Gentoo, I would definitely need your help in getting this done. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I want to be more than just a user, I want to contribute too.

Hi Anton!
Is good to have you in this forum.
For compiling see
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Getting_Started
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/External_Dependencies
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Generic_Build
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/CMake_Build
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Subversion
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/CVS
Also see the packages on the debian build. That will give you a more detailed idea of dependencies (but not complete)
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Debian_Build
If you want to contribute as a 3d artist we are looking for .k3d models and tutorials.
1-We would like to make a good 3d model gallery to showcase k3d.
2-On k3d you can record tutorials and the playback them on k3d on the fly. See:
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Tutorial_Menu
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Recording_Tutorials
If you have any programming knowledge you can also contribute as a developer.
http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Developer_Documentation
Also to follow this conversation you should subscribe to the k3d-development mailing list.
Cheers,
Joaquín.

I forgot something else.
I your modem is not working you can do some test on a virtual machine on a win32 box.
See http://www.virtualbox.org/ which is a good option.
Or http://www.colinux.org
So first compile it there and then you can go to the real machine knowing its all dependencies.
Cheers,
Joaquín

Hi!
Pleasa, would you give as more information about your system? Is win32 isn’t it?
The 0.6.7 is compiled from the .tar.bz2
And the 0.7 is from SVN.
I am on a ubuntu feisty fawn.
0.6.7
-----
The the File->Import menu works for me.
The Create->GeometryReader->OBJMeshInput (0.6) plugin works in the same way that File-> Import menu
0.7
---
The the File->Import menu doesn’t work for me. Seems that the .obj filter is disabled on the compilation. (havent checked that out)
Besides Create->MeshReader->OBJMeshReader works but it only imports the points.
Cheers,
Joaquín.

Hi!
About the .obj: Is it just a simple box, isn’t it?
You mean that the real .obj doesn’t import well?
To get 0.7 you have to download and compile it.
Get it from svn http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Subversion
http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/
Here you have how to compile (build) it.

Hi Joaquín,
Thanks for the reply. Now I have a problem with gtkglext and gtkglextmm. I know they are installed but I get an error when compiling K-3d saying that they are not present.
Regards,
Anton

Hi!
If you are compiling 0.7
go to your build directory and type
make edit_cache
press t to toggle to advanced mode
search the K3D_GTKGLEXT_CONFIG_INCLUDE_DIR K3D_GTKGLEXT_INCLUDE_DIR variable and set it to the correct values (example:/usr/include/gtkglext-1.0)
If you are compiling 0.6
I dont remember well. Maybe rerun configure with the
CPPFLAGS=\"-I /path/to/gtkglext/headers\" ./configure
I think that should work
Cheers,
Joaquín.
