Hi kim!
If you only want to save one frame once you rendered you image (not the preview mode) k3d will display the image on imagemagick.
If you left-click on the image a menu will appear. Then go to file-> save and put the desired format on the file extension.
If you are going to render an animation i think there is no easy way to render to other format. Although later you can use a image converter like imagemagick.(command line convert)
http://www.imagemagick.org
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/convert.php
other converters for windows with gui
http://ifconverter.blogspot.com/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/imgbconvert/
there are also gui for linux as konqueror context menu plugins
Cheers!
Joaquín.

Expounding a little on what Joaquin said:
* When you render, the file format written-out is determined by your render engine. Different engines may have different capabilities, most RenderMan engines write TIFF images exclusively.
* K-3D uses the user’s choice of program for displaying rendered images, imagemagick is one that can be used to export an image to different formats, but the choice varies by platform.
Cheers,
Tim
