Is there a way to join shapes together?

This message was originally posted by Jean-Claude Gervais on 05/21/2008 09:29:17
I apologize for the newbie question, but please -
I can’t seem to figure out how to join objects together permanently so that if I ever try to move the object all the other joined pieces will keep their relative positions.
For example, I want to ’bolt’ together a disk and a sphere, so that the disk will always stay at a certain position and attitude towards the sphere.
If I select both shapes and then change to the ’move’ pointer, yes, both shapes will follow wherever I move them to, but if there many shapes, I don’t want to select each one manually, this would be slow and error-prone.
I’m sure the problem is I do not yet understand how k3d wants this done.
Thanks in advance

There are two options actually:
1. Use the parent tool:
Click the parent tool button (6th from the left)
Click on a \"child\" mesh
Click on the \"parent\" mesh
Repeat for all meshes you want to move together
From now on, moving/rotating/... the parent will also affect the children, but you can also still manipulate the children individually
2. Use MergeMesh (0.7.4.0 highly recommended, see https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=11113)
Simply select all meshes you want to join, and then select \"Mesh Modifier -> MergeMesh\" from the right-click menu.
Cheers,
Bart

Thank you, Bart!
I am running version 0.6.7.0, so it might explain why I still cannot join shapes together:
If I use the first method you gave, either I get no effect at all or both shapes suddenly vanish. I have to undo the parenting action for the shapes to re-appear. Strange!
I also tried the second method you mentioned - I don’t have a MergeMesh in the Mesh Modifier menu. Maybe that is because of the version? There are plenty of other menu items in there, but none with \"merge\" in their names...
The link you posted brought me to the project page for K3D, was that what you intended? I’m not sure I understand what you were referring to.
Thanks for the help!

Ah, sorry, the \")\" ended up in the link. Here is the proper link:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=11113
You can get version 0.7.4.0 from that download page. Not sure why the parent tool doesn’t work in 0.6, but I’ve tried both methods in 0.7 yesterday.
