Softening edges

Hi, I'm new to your software.
When I export a sphere shaped object as a .obj, I can see a grid pattern on the object causing the sphere to not look completely smooth. Is their a setting that can be applied to a poly sphere to make it have soft edges and look smooth, or do you just have to pump up the mumber of poly's that make up the sphere. I'm more familiar with Maya where you have choices, soft edges or hard edges, soft edges make the object look smooth and hard edges resembles what i see when viewing a sphere in k3d.
The object will be used as a template for a model made in a 3d printer.
Thanks for your time, John

You can generate per-vertex normals in K-3D using the CalculateNormals modifier, which is what Maya is actually doing "under the covers"; however, the OBJMeshWriter sink currently ignores this normal data when writing its output OBJ file. This would be easy enough to add, if you're interested, or willing to wait ...
Cheers,
Tim
